Germany is going to have its own spitting image
Sky Germany will broadcast a tailor-made Spitting image show to the German public, with puppets of national personalities already in development. In line with the rollout of the second series on BritBox UK and BritBox Australia, the innovative format and band tuning will experience an approx. 50/50 mix of globally resonant content from the English version (reissued by leading German vocal artists) and new local topical sketches (written by German comedy writers) shot in the UK Spitting image studio close to the transmission to ensure maximum topicality.
With well-known national figures like Jürgen Klopp and Angela Merkel already starring in the first season, as you would expect with the upcoming German federal elections, puppets such as Armin Laschet, Markus Söder, Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz, are in production as well as nationally. TV stars including Barbara Schöneberger and athletes including Thomas Müller. These are just a few of the new German faces to fall under the gaze of the legendary Spitting Image Workshop.
Recognized by critics and social networks, Spitting image recorded record subscribers for BritBox UK, the BBC and ITV have created a streaming platform, and 4.4 million audiences for ITV with a single US Election Special, the highest Saturday night audience rating since four years (one of ITV’s biggest Saturday ABC1 night audiences of 2020). On official social media channels, Spitting image The content was hugely popular with over 200 million views worldwide and three # 1 videos on YouTube.
With the world getting smaller and more turbulent, celebrated last year Spitting image Co-creator Roger Law has returned to lead the show’s creative team, while award-winning Jeff Westbrook (The simpsons, Futurama) joined as Showrunner, leading the international editorial team on the iconic British satirical take on world events.

Produced by Avalon (Taskmaster, The Russell Howard Hour, Catastrophe, Breeders everything is going to be alright, last week tonight with John Oliver), puppet development for the second series is already underway with Joe Biden, Boris Johnson, Prince Andrew, Vladimir Poutine, Harry & Meghan, Beyoncé, Angela Merkel, Dwayne Johnson, Ed Sheeran, Jürgen Klopp, Elon Musk, Adele, Covid-19, James Corden, Emmanuel Macron, Mark Zuckerberg, Donald Trump and Dominic Cummings are just a few of the global figures who have come under the series’ legendary gaze for the first blockbuster series. A new generation of satirical writers and vocal artists has been brought together to lead a new wave of ‘public service satire’. In keeping with the ’80s and’ 90s, scripts were written and new puppets were prepared as delivery approached to keep each week’s episode as topical as possible.
Internationally, the debut of the first series attracted the channel’s second-best viewership in Finland for its time slot and was hailed by Finland’s leading newspaper as, “As vicious and risky as before” and successfully launched in Belgium with 22% total TV audience share, as well as millions of views in the US via YouTube.
The bespoke German elements will be produced by Avalon and Redseven Entertainment, Producer Georg Kappenstein, Executive Producer Sebastian Benthues, Head Writer Elmar Freels. Avalon executive producers are Jeff Westbrook, Joanna Beresford, Jon Thoday, Richard Allen-Turner and Roger Law. BritBox’s commissioning director is Nana Hughes.
As part of the new round of contracts, one is being revised in German by the country’s leading voice artists.
Spitting image will return to the UK this fall.
