Movandi Demonstrates Transparent 5G mmWave Connectivity for Vehicle-to-All Cellular Communications

IRVINE, Calif .– (BUSINESS WIRE) –Movandi, a leader in new 5G millimeter wave (mmWave) technology today announced a successful demonstration of mmWave repeaters, delivering the promise of 5G vehicle-to-all cellular communications (C-V2X) for the next generation of connected cars. A Movandi BeamXR powered mmWave repeater installed inside a car delivered performance gains of over 10x with an average throughput of 1.5 gigabits per second (Gbps) over the Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband network. The test results showed a 25X improvement in throughput of a typical 4G LTE service and was performed on behalf of an industry partner. “A wider deployment of high-performance, low-latency mmWave technology is a key element in expanding the adoption of 5G for connected and autonomous vehicles,” said Patrick Moorhead, senior analyst at Moor Insights & Strategy. “As 5G interfaces replace older generations of telematics controls, 5G will drive the introduction of new automotive infotainment services and richer data cloud connectivity. In the years to come, 5G mmWave solutions will enable an array of C-V2X innovations. Automotive systems will communicate with each other and with the gNB infrastructure, dramatically improving road safety, improving traffic flow and enabling autonomous driving. And Movandi technologies can play a crucial role in this 5G transformation. ”
The 5G mmWave spectrum unlocks an order of magnitude of better performance thanks to much higher data rates and lower latency than what can be achieved by the spectrum below 6 GHz. This performance can enable the low latency and high throughput needed to deliver the mobile connectivity and services required by connected cars loaded with sensors, which generate terabytes of data for cloud-based AI systems and predictive algorithms for improve safety and collision prevention systems.
“Through on-board testing of repeaters powered by Movandi under real-world conditions, we have proven that our mmWave technology offers an out-of-the-box solution to extend 5G coverage, whether fixed or mobile, for a dramatically user experience. improved. Today, we have shown that our technology is ready for large-scale deployment in connected vehicles, ”said Maryam Rofougaran, CEO and co-founder of Movandi. “We have optimized the performance of our repeaters powered by BeamX mmWave for demanding automotive applications by comprehensively adapting the 5G radio as a complete system and by co-designing the RF chipset, DSP functions, beamforming and algorithms. We have partnered with Airfide Networks, a 5G software innovator, to develop the forwarding algorithm that makes our BeamXR powered repeaters so efficient in fast signal transfers. ”
However, as the industry moves from 4G to 5G, many service providers see sub-6GHz technology as the only feasible 5G option for mobile connectivity in cars. The assumption is that higher speed mmWave technology is too difficult to implement in fast cars where steel and glass materials are barriers to the penetration of the mmWave signal. The short range and declining data rates experienced by 5G mmWave handset users on the road exemplify this challenge.
“As a market leader in glass and glass related products, AGC Automotive Americas Co. is committed to developing innovative and flexible glass solutions to meet the needs of global automotive suppliers,” said Eric Rogers, head of business development, AGC Automotive Americas Co. “Our partnership with Movandi is part of our core strategy to always be at the forefront of the industry. With Powered by Movandi solutions, we solidify our commitment to working with 5G mmWave leaders to deliver best-in-class technology solutions for 5G connected cars, mobility, homes and businesses. ”
According to Gartner, the connection rate of 5G interfaces in in-vehicle automotive telematics will increase from 0% in 2019 to 51% by 2029. The automotive market will drive the adoption of 5G for the Internet of Things (IoT), reaching nearly 180 million connected connections. cars by 2029.

Movandi has demonstrated that its in-vehicle BeamXR mmWave powered repeaters can solve these challenges, enabling continuous ultra-broadband connections in urban areas with 5G access points spaced approximately 1,000 meters apart. In today’s typical 5G coverage areas, next-generation Node B (gNB) base stations are often deployed within 500 meters of each other. Coverage is also limited to very close to a gNB, while BeamXR powered mmWave repeaters extend continuous coverage and allow smooth transfer between gNBs to maintain continuity. By using mmWave repeaters inside cars, 5G connections with data speeds of 1.5 Gbps can be achieved with more distant gNBs (1000 meters or more), allowing operators to reduce costs by reducing the number of gNBs deployed along the routes.
BeamXR powered repeaters can provide seamless 5G ultra-wideband coverage for end users and advanced computer systems in infotainment control panels whether the car is in motion or stationary. The repeaters manage close coordination with the base station and maintain continuous coverage at highway speed while performing handoffs between gNBs in seconds. A single repeater can support multiple mobile phones or modems inside a car and provide 5G link to the cloud for autonomous vehicles. Movandi repeaters also reduce the power consumption of mobile phones and minimize mmWave radiation inside the car.
