The ‘Building the Future’ theme returns for its second year, with over 1,200 events held across England to showcase the benefits of learning.

The week aims to celebrate and promote the fantastic benefits that apprenticeship offers to learners and employers, highlighting the companies that are investing in this life-changing path to education.

State Secretary for Education Nadhim Zahawi said:

Apprenticeships offer people of all ages the opportunity to earn a living while learning and building a successful career, while providing the skilled workforce this country needs to build back stronger.

National Apprenticeship Week is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate and recognize the achievements of apprentices, their employers and training providers.

It’s great to see so many events and activities taking place across the country that I hope will inspire even more people to start their learning journey.

Apprentices are leading the charge to build back stronger after the pandemic with over 40% more people starting an apprenticeship in the first quarter of 2021/22 compared to the same period of 2020/21, again up from levels pre-pandemic in 2019.

From providing vital care in hospitals to helping us provide the skilled labor this country needs, apprentices are a cornerstone of the government’s plans to improve the country, with more 5 million people starting an apprenticeship since May 2010.

Laura Boswell, industry talent specialist for Channel 4, said:

Apprentices have had an incredible impact on our business and bring a fresh perspective to everything we do here at Channel 4. They really challenge the status quo, and we empower them to do so!

Annie Cook, NHS Career Development Coordinator at NHS Cromer Hospital Norfolk, commented:

The company, the organization and our managers here know the value of someone who has gone through an apprenticeship.

Jannah, a software engineering apprentice at KPMG, said:

My apprenticeship allows me to combine my skills and my passion for creativity in the digital sector and I earn money while learning on the job.

Training and employment programs such as apprenticeship play a key role in the government’s employment plan and are designed to protect, support and create jobs.

The government is committed to supporting learning through innovation and increased funding. In September 2021, a new online service was launched to make it easier for large employers who pay the apprenticeship levy to spend their funds, and for other employers to review and apply for funding. Public funding for apprenticeships is set to increase by £170m to £2.7bn in 2024-25.
