SABIC launches BLUEHERO™ to help accelerate the transition to electrification and a low-carbon future, with an initial focus on the automotive industry
SABIC, a global chemical industry leader, introduced BLUEHERO™, an expanding ecosystem of materials, solutions, expertise and programs to help accelerate the global energy transition to electric power and support the achievement of global climate change goals. The company’s starting point with BLUEHERO is to support the automotive industry‘s mission to create better, safer and more efficient electric vehicles (EVs), with a focus on improving the structural components of the battery with unique flame retardant materials and solution development expertise.
The automotive industry is leading the charge in moving towards new, more sustainable mobility systems. This includes a major move towards battery-powered electric vehicles, which can convert more than 77% of electricity into motion, compared to just 12-30% for vehicles with internal combustion engines. In addition to these high performances, electric vehicles emit no exhaust pollutants and are generally responsible for a significantly lower amount of greenhouse gas emissions during their operation, which allows important contributions to the achievement of global climate change goals.

SABIC provides cost-effective and technologically advanced thermoplastics – which can offer significant advantages over conventional materials (metals) – to help the automotive industry further improve the performance of electric vehicles. For example, the use of plastics in electric vehicle battery, electrical and charging components can provide multiple benefits: reduced weight and system complexity, extended range, extended design freedom, streamlined manufacturing, recyclability and improved thermal management and occupant safety.
SABIC’s new BLUEHERO electrification initiative also leverages specific knowledge and expertise in large part molding, compression molding, advanced injection molding and polymer flame interaction to help customers offer solutions capable of meeting critical requirements and enabling efficient production.
The company plans to strengthen and expand its thermoplastics offering to enable electrification with the increased focus and new investments that will be available under BLUEHERO.
