Something is brewing at Hopmeadow Brewing Company in Avon | Connecticut News
AVON (WFSB) – Something’s Brewing in the only brewery in town. Courtney Zieller visited Hopmeadow Brewing Company for an insight into the family business.
“We’re a family business,” said owner and head brewer Brian Hickey. “My son Gabriel is the assistant brewer, my daughter Olivia is the main cashier and my wife helps me with everything else. She’s a local artist and she does all the artwork.
Brian Hickey said he had been brewing at home since he was 20, then got back into it in 2012.
“I started dragging my son out of his room every weekend to help me out and now we do everything together,” Hickey said.
The brewery tries to use as many local ingredients as possible and said its culinary experience adds to this brewing practice.
“Being a chef for 30 years – it’s all about local ingredients,” Hickey said. “We love using local farms. »
The first beer that Zieller and Hickey talked about was the brewery’s Polka Pilsner. The beer uses a combination of local and German noble hops to create a crisp taste.
“The beer is very easy to drink and has a nice lemony finish,” Hickey said.
Next, Citra Nitra, a New England-style IPA.
“This one is brewed with 100% Citra hops and has a nice, mellow mouthfeel,” Hickey said. “It’s very lemony and juicy.”
Hickey said the brewery uses about 150 pounds of local organic butternut squash from Garlic Farm in West Granby for the next beer.
“Our Punkin Dunkel is a German dark beer,” he said. “It’s a popular beer during the fall months and it sells very well.”
The last beer Zieller heard of was a chocolate milk stout.
“It’s brewed with milk sugar or lactose,” Hickey said. It has organic cocoa, uh, in it, tons. It comes out really chocolatey and really creamy.
Hickey said the beer is plugged into a nitro tap which makes the beer smooth and drinkable like a dessert.
The brasserie has added a day to its schedule and is now open Thursday and Friday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., Saturday from noon to 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m.
